Search for survivors begins after earthquake shakes southern Japan

The search has begun for survivors who may be trapped in buildings toppled by a major earthquake in southern Japan. At least nine people have been killed in the town of Mashiki near Kumamoto city on the island of Kyushu. At least nine dead, hundreds injured as powerful quake hits southern Japan. 

 At least nine people have been killed and more than seven hundred injured after a magnitude-6.5 tremor jolted southwestern Japan late Thursday. Houses collapsed and power was lost in Mashiki in the Kumamoto Prefecture on the southwestern island of Kyushu.
