Girls’ take on arranged marriages in India

The girls who did this for fun and creativity told The Hindu: “You don’t see these tropes of the quintessential Indian mother and the arranged marriage exist only in pop culture; just look at any of the classified ads in the papers. It’s a stereotype that’s justified by the society I’m in,” adding that they took lyrics for the parody from matrimonial ads published in papers. Elango and Krupa Varghese prepared a video for a college contest titled “Be Our Pondati” and happened to upload it on YouTube. To their surprise, the video has gone viral with over 150,000 views. Pondati meaning wife in Tamil, the video is a hilarious parody of Carly Rae Jepsen’s famous song, ‘Call Me Maybe’ featuring Varghese as a typical conservative Indian mother looking for a ‘tall thin and homely’ wife for her son and a daughter-in-law for herself with extremely stereotypical demands like producing babies ‘soon’, preparing food and working only part-time.
